Berlino Oscura / Unlighted Berlin
As a response to the European energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine and tensions with Russia, Germany started to take energy-saving measures, like other European countries. Among many emergency interventions, in Berlin is taking place the switching off of the external night lighting of many monuments and public buildings. Luca Girardini documented this historical moment reflecting also on Berlin urban landscape seen under a “new light”. But is this light really new? Since most of these monuments were built before the arrival of public electric lighting, now we can see them in the way they were seen for many decades. Can this historical moment also make us realize that not everything has to be at our disposal all the time? Can even a crisis be helpful in starting to see things from a different perspective? Girardini has been working on Berlino Oscura and will continue to document this new phase of life of the city he’s living in.
